Ruby Pounds the Pavement to Lose Weight
ooking for some inspiration to get in shape?

Try tuning in to Ruby, Style's hit reality show about Ruby Gettinger's battle with obesity.

"One day after watching, I was like, 'I need to go to the gym,'" recalls Molly Sullivan, 42, a human resources worker from Camarillo, Calif. "Ten days later, I joined a gym and now we're four months later and I'm losing weight."

And how's it going for Molly?

Molly has shed 41 pounds! So it was no surprise that she was among the the hundreds of people who came out yesterday morning to join Ruby (see photo above) on the Los Angeles stop of her nationwide "Walk Across America" tour.

"I saw these women crying on Oprah, talking about how they never went out of their homes," Ruby told us. "They're fighting the same thing I'm fighting, but I've always gone out my home. I was 716 pounds and I lived my life no matter what."

Ruby recently heard from one such woman who started riding a bike after she saw her doing it. "She said these kids were making fun of her so she said, 'I'm not going to do this anymore,'" Ruby said. "But then she thought about it and said, 'Yes, I am,' because she heard what I said, that they'll eventually shut up. She said they did shut up and now they're her friends!"

Challenge 1 Week 8 Day 54
X-posted to team_fatty & takami826

The temporary Betagen Bloat only amounted to a 1/4 gain last week that quickly melted away this week.  Not happy at the .09 loss of muscle mass but given the fat loss I have to burn off, I'll live with it.

week 6 update
x-posted to takami826 & team_fatty

I started Betagen this week. That might cause a 1-2lb gain but it's temporary, IF it even happens. But given it helps incredibly with DOMS, it's allowing me to push a lot harder on my workouts which can only mean positive gains in the muscle and negatives in the fat.

Anyway, I have 6 more weeks for my first 12 week challenge, I am still striving for a total of a 30lb scale loss by April 20.

Challenge 1 Week 5 Day 33
x-posted to team_fatty & takami826

I'm a little anal, but wrapping up week five, I know, being a woman, that potential plateau weeks are coming

basic stats
Scale change: -13.75 lbs
Muscle change: +.71 lbs
Fat change: -14.46 lbs
Average per week: 2.75 lbs
Last week: 251
This week: 251.25
Scale change: +.25

Scale change is unsettling, however my neurotic excel sheet shows much progress other than what a scale can show. thank the gods!

Question
I've never exercised regularly before-

What are the immediate and long term (and after what period of time) benefits you all have reaped from exercise??

I'm looking for a little motivation :)

Winners announced today...
The 2007 winners will be posted today, per the website (and the Grand Master CHampion.)

Last year I knew several people that won, this year I think there are going to be a lot of 'unknowns'.

So far, I know that my friend Suzanne Ihde (AKA "Suz") won the F 30-45 category and a lady named Margi Faze won overall Grand Master Champion. The group of teachers that were featured on the site won the large group.

The rest, well, who knows..

Hello! I'm new!
Hello! I started my first 12 week challenge on Jan. 6 2008. My parnter has followed the Body for Life program before and is completed the challenge with me. He knows the program inside and out and helping me tremendously.

I've been following the program for a week and half. So far. So good. It does take some adjustment and planning but it is a welcome change. I am also a lacto vegetarian so that also offers a challenge but I find I'm doing okay with it. (any other vegetarians out there?)

Eating for Life by Bill Phillips has been a big help with our meal planning. Often I replace tofu for chicken in recipes. My partner is not a vegetarian so at times we are making 2 variations of the same meal. I've also found Body for Life for Women by Pamela Peeke helpul. (any opinions on the Peeke book? My partner doesn't like it.)

I've been blogging about my fitness experience over at vox.

So hi! I'm excited to find an active bfl community.

Question about Bowflex + BFL
Hi All,
I am starting on a new 12 week challenge with my fiance soon. We have saved and looked for good deals on home fitness equipment, as driving to the gym/paying exorbitant gym fees has been a fitness obstacle for us in the past.
Luckily, we've found a few really awesome deals through Craigslist and Sears, and for under $1000 we recently purchased:

-a nordic track elliptical trainer on close-out at Sears (my preferred cardio) (it was the last one, a floor model, just priced to liquidate because it was soooo "last season")
-a really awesome professional gym-quality recumbent bike (his preferred cardio) (yay craigslist!)
-a Bowflex sport for our weight/resistance training (again, yay Craigslist!)

Now that we both have cardio and resistance training equipment we like (no more excuses when we wake up and it's right there in the living room every day!), we're taking this weekend to plan our meals for the next week and go shopping accordingly.
We plan to start on Monday. w00t!

My question is twofold:
1) have any of you in this community successfully used a Bowflex for your weight-training portion of BFL?

2) since we bought ours "used" (it's still in great condition), there was no instruction manual. I am having a lot of trouble finding any instruction manuals online (other than the assembly manual, but that's not what we need), or advice online about how to use it- preferably pictures of each exercise Bowflex claims the machine can help you do.

I found it odd that the Bowflex itself doesn't seem to come with any instructions (other than assembly instructions) when you buy it, which is what I was kind of expecting to find when I went to the Bowflex website. (Great, so they tell you how to put it together, but they charge you extra for the pleasure of figuring out how to use it?)

I think I can sit down with my original BFL book and go through each exercise, page by page, and find a bowflex equivalent, but I was wondering if there is any info like that already out there?
The only other materials I have found are $50 workout dvds from Bowflex (uhm, no thanks), a $30 book on amazon (which I can buy used for about $17), or a $40 piece of 3rd party software, which looks good, but hey, $40 I don't really have to spend.

I will pay if I have to, but I live paycheck to paycheck and that money will have to come out of gas or groceries somewhere. It took us long enough to save for the equipment itself.
If anyone else has pointers.... I would really appreciate them.

Hisself thinks we should just buy one of these training aids. I think I can figure it out with Bill's book and some quality machine time.
Has anyone else done this themselves?

I'm really excited for BFL!

I've kept my own recipe blog for a while now trying specifically to collect healthy recipes that star vegetables and fruits and, as a plus, include protein if possible.

I have now opened it as a LJ communityfor all to participate in. Join up if you want, and I look forward to seeing your great vegetable recipes!

[_myid]

Holy crap, I did the biggest number on my legs and they hurt!

Body For Life has really changed my life. Granted, I've really done all the work but it wouldn't be possible with guidance from the book and asking for help on the forums too.

I'm just into my second challenge, and I've changed many things in my life: my outlook on myself, my body, my perspective on life, I have way more energy than I ever thought possible. I'm doing more in my life, I'm accomplishing more, I'm reching goals, I'm setting goals

I'm setting the bar higher and higher every day, and I'm actually thinking about going to University.

I really believe I now have the self motivation and determination to go. I never considered about going past college, let alone University.

Everything has taken a turn for the better. Now it didn't happen over night, but I can fully and proudly say I've become a better person within these 12 weeks.

*glow*
